Today, the term 'salsa' as we know it, has become synonymous with the dance.

Salsa dance styles are seemingly infinite. Different step patterns, timing of steps, movements on the dance floor (slot, circular), preferences of turns and even attitudes amount to characteristics that may identify a style.

As such, there are no strict rules of how salsa should be danced, although one can distinguish a number of styles, which are discussed here.
